Happy Thanksgiving and Pre Christmas/Holiday Season!

The Calvert County Minority Business Alliance and its members continue to be active and making an inpact in the community.

CCMBA is a member of the Tri County Council of Southern MD Minority Business Opportunities Task Force. A Smart Biz Tool was kicked of on November 19, 2011 at the College of Southern MD LaPlata Campus. Below is an article that highlights the event. CCMBA President, Dawn Tucker, is included in the article. CCMBA members and board members were able to attend the kickoff. We will be sending out more information regarding how the Smart BiZ Tool can benefit your business or a new start up business.

CCMBA presented at the League of Women Voters annual evening with the Southern Maryland Delegation on Tuesday, November 17, 2011. Delegate Mark Fisher will be holding town hall meetings on the following dates and locations. CCMBA along with the Southern MD Coalition of African American Community Based Organizations is scheduled to meet with the Southern MD Delegation on Friday, January 11, 2011. CCMBA will be hosting a mini business expo in partnership with Huntingtown High School on Thursday, January 26, 2011. Secretary, Shanell Nero, President Dawn Tucker, member Shelby Potts of Southern MD College Access Network have been working with Hungtingtown High School Principal and Vice Principal and Mentoring Coordinator, Lynne Gillis to plan the event. Huntingown High has assigned mentors to students who need more encouragement. Several CCMBA members and community organizations will be participating. We will provide more information in January on the participants.

Tri-County Council wants to help businesses be smart

Concerned Black Women recognize community contributors

Many local women were honored for their contributions to the community, and women’s wisdom was noted by the guest speaker at the fourth annual Luncheon and Salute to Excellence Awards Gala of the Concerned Black Women of Calvert County on Saturday at the Rod ‘N’ Reel Restaurant in Chesapeake Beach

The more than 100 attendees, mostly dressed in business suits and dresses, listened to author Dorothy Bailey talk about the wisdom and life stories of a few of the 90 women she interviewed for her book titled, “In a Different Light: Reflections and Beauty of Wise Women of Color.” The book showcases beauty, wisdom and tenacity that these women portray, she said. She talked about overcoming struggles about which some of the women she interviewed spoke, and how they raised their heads high and overcame prejudices against them and personal adversities to become successful, positive women. …Read the full story
